Genealogy Workshop on May 20

Ceili of the Valley Society presents Finding Your Roots, a free virtual genealogical workshop.

In this brief session, we will only be able to scratch the surface of the many aspects of Genealogy and Family History. Each point covered deserves one or more sessions. But, hopefully, you will leave with an overview and a working understanding of some basics.

Naturally, we can’t escape the classic “Who, What, Where, Why, When, How.”
Who does genealogy? Millions of people- including you?
What is Genealogy? Is it the same as Family History?
Why do it?

Then, as we consider the “Where, When, and How” you will be introduced to some of the changes that have made genealogy so popular. You’ll be shown examples of things that can be discovered, and the places to discover them. Finally, you will be given enough tools to Get Started!

This workshop is free, but donations are graciously accepted. CVS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

About the presenter:

Douglas H. Crosby, a native of New York State, followed a job opening to Oregon in 1978. He and his wife have lived there since. Although their three children were born in Oregon, they and four grandchildren now live in three other states.

After spending 18 months of his childhood in Peru, South America, dropping out of college, serving two years in the US Army, and working in residential construction for many years, he became a Rural Letter Carrier (US Postal Service) in 1987.

Since retirement, he has pursued interests in reading, travel, theology, photography, model railroading and genealogy.

His serious efforts at genealogy began with a week at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City in 1980, analyzing census records to answer the question “Who was the father of William Crosby (his 3rd great grandfather), born 1801, Homer, NY?”

He is currently the Program Vice President of the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society, and a WVGS Board member. Pre-covid he volunteered at their Genealogy Help Desk in the Salem Public Library and was an occasional speaker. He is also on the Steering Committee, and acting as webmaster, for the Ancestry Detectives in Silverton.

To facilitate his research, and in connection with his small business “Looking for Grandma – a genealogical research service” he has maintained all-access membership with Ancestry.com (where he was part of their “Expert Connect” program), and access to a variety of online resources.

He is a member of the National Genealogical Society, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and the Association of Professional Genealogists.
